Modern Living
A downloadable game for Windows and macOS
All funds go directly toward buying assets for my next projects
Your parents are away. You have their house, a farm at the edge of town, and the family shop to look after.
Sunny Meadows is a quiet town in the north. By day you work a till, grow pumpkins and make video games on the computer in your room. By night, past the gate in the city wall, the old town is full of monsters.
Your great-grandfather started G-Neric, the town's game company. He sealed the monsters away with a ritual that took him with it. The seal is cracking, and G-Neric is up for sale.
WHAT IS IN IT
Making games. Pick a genre and a theme, then put the work in - ideas float up and you click them, and you squash the bugs before they get into the release. 10 genres, 15 themes, and the players write reviews. Make the same kind of game twice and they notice.
Buy G-Neric, hire up to 4 people from town, and make bigger games for consoles. Make enough of them and something opens under the company.
6 jobs, a farm with 6 crops, and the family shop - the corner shop or the market, your pick.
Fights at night, turn by turn: attack, block, eat something or run. 30 monsters in 10 families, and they get bigger the deeper you go.
A workbench for potions, weapons, monster bait and monster jewellery.
12 people with their own days, their own stories and hearts to earn. Any of them can be your partner.
Four seasons. Winter is long and dark, and the snow slows you down.
Up to 5 players in one world, each with their own house and farm.
THE DEMO
The first 14 days - spring and summer - are free. When autumn comes the demo ends, and the full game carries on from your save.
There's a walkthrough to download too, free, with every job, crop, recipe and person in it. The game also shows you what everything does the first time you walk into a place.
THE LIMITS, BEFORE YOU BUY
>> The day and night and battle ambient music was made with Suno, an AI tool. I'd rather you knew that before you decide than after. The pixel art is LimeZu's, and the sound effects are mine and from Freesound.
Playing together means typing in a friend's address, over Hamachi or the same home network. There's no server and no matchmaking. How to set it up is in the game.
Keyboard and mouse. No controller.
One of the two endings locks the game for 10 real days. It tells you that on the button, before you choose.
>> Windows and Mac. The Mac version hasn't been played on a Mac yet, because I don't have one.
ON WINDOWS
Unzip it and run the .exe inside. Nothing to install. Windows will say "Windows protected your PC" the first time - click More info, then Run anyway. Every small game on itch gets that warning.
ON MAC
Unzip it, then right-click Modern Living and choose Open, and Open again. A Mac won't open a game from a small developer with a double-click the first time.
If you play it, tell me what your first game was called and what the reviewers said about it.
