Patchwork Purgatory
A downloadable game for Windows
Everything you fight is a piece of paper standing up.
They crease when they move. They tear when you hit them. Get behind one and you find out whether it has a back - some of them carry something on the reverse, some of them are hollow, and finding out which is most of the fight.
You are the only solid thing in the frame, because you are not from here. You were sent from a world that is real, to make this one safe enough to leave.
The husks that kneel to you came off the same ship.
WHAT IS IN IT
16 weapons, found lying in the world rather than bought. 6 spells. 9 kinds of enemy and 8 bosses, each with its own moves and its own fixed difficulty - so you can walk down the wrong road first and get taken apart by something you were not ready for. That is not a mistake. The roads are open in every direction and nothing stops you.
299 hand-cut cards. 74 sounds. Six endings, decided by how many of the innocent you spared against how many you put down - and clearing a graveyard is not a moral question. Only two things in this world ever offered you a choice.
An angel and a devil float at your shoulders and argue about what you are doing. The angel never lies. The devil will, unless you turn that off in the settings, which is the only honest way to make this game easier.
WHAT IT DOES NOT HAVE
No tutorial. No quest markers beyond a compass and eight road posts you have to walk to once before you can travel back to them. No difficulty setting, because the difficulty is which direction you chose.
Dying does not end anything. You wake at the shrine with everything you had. The only ending is the last fight.
BEFORE YOU DECIDE
The artwork is made with AI tools. The sound is not - it is recorded, from the Sonniss GDC library, and no audio in this game has been near an AI tool of any kind.
I am one person and this is the first build anyone but me has played. Things will be wrong, and some of them will be wrong in ways I cannot see from in here. I will keep working on it.
It is free. There is a five dollar donation on the page if you want to leave one, and nothing in the game is behind it - there is no version you get for paying.
IF YOU PLAY IT
Tell me which boss you found first. The order people walk the roads in is the one thing I could not test on my own, and I think it changes the whole game.
And if you get to the end, come back and tell me what you thought it meant.
